I sat down yesterday to write a listicle on 12 things I’ve learnt since launching Wise Child 12 weeks ago. I will write that list later (watch this space). But, as I typed, one of the bullet points felt so important, I decided to write a whole article about it.👇
I've Been Feeling my Age (But Not in the Way You Think.)
Currently, I have a Post-it note stuck next to my desk that reads 💫 Elder energy 💫.
In spirituality and a lot of cultures, being an elder isn’t (only) about age. It’s about moving into a different stage in your life where you are guiding, teaching, sharing perspective and wisdom — often without the firey heat of a youngster.
For the record, I’m 41. A young 41. 😉 I’m not old by any stretch. But there’s something about Elder Energy that feels true for me — and light, and anchoring and invigorating, and exciting and beautiful.
Below are the (gentle) realisations I’ve had in the last week. And these are fresh, so apologies if they’re not fully formed yet:
💫 There truly is a season for everything. I could only have written Wise Child as a 39-year-old mama. And I could only have promoted it as a 41-year-old. For this book to be written and talked about in the most honoring way, I needed, not only the insight of my age… but the loss of the desperate, clawing ambition I had in my twenties. (An ambition that I miss sometimes, but allows me to create content that is truly heart-led and not click-baiting).
💫 There’s less fire in this season. One of my writing students is currently writing about a very difficult dynamic with a family member — a dynamic I’m all too familiar with. She’s caught in the fire and pain, and fury. (Which is making it very difficult for her to write, or have perspective on.) I am not. I’m passed it. Which makes me the perfect mentor.
💫 It’s not really about me anymore. Again, this isn’t a bad thing. I am loving this season of guiding, coaching and leading. Taking the spotlight off myself feels like a threat to my ego, but a huge exhale to my soul. Main character energy? It never really felt good for me. Even as a 20-year-old, I aligned with that Elder Energy in many ways, but I wasn’t confident enough to embrace it.
My spiritual healer has said this to me for years:
‘Your purpose here is to experience… to triumph.. and then to teach it.”💫
💫 Elder energy is still cool AF. I’m not about to swap my bikini and cut-offs for a [insert cliched old lady outfit]. I love defying the traditions of age. I skateboard in my forties. I feel hotter now than in my early thirties. (That was the trenches of new motherhood after all!) Let’s not forget, I was widowed at the age of 23.
What is age? Just a number we attach a story to.
Hey, maybe in my fifties I’ll revert to the energy of adolescents. Maybe in my seventies, I’ll fully understand matrescence.
There’s so much growth in playing with identities, with curiosity and lightness.
For now, I’m loving my 💫 Elder Energy Era 💫.
Taking the spotlight off myself. Valuing my wisdom. Guiding my writers. Marvelling at Gen Alpha and younger. Flexing my perspective and opinions. Flirting from this season, as the latest version of me – not someone I need to force myself to be.
How can you embrace your Elder Energy? (No matter what age you are.)
And is it calling you, like it’s calling to me?
I’d love to hear how this lands for you.
